Bots in a forum?

i have seen a google one there as well, i think they use the bots to scan websites so that they can be added in for their search results on their search engines. it keeps the searchers up to date.
also i read somewhere that google uses these bots to collect information regarding the website as well, simple stuff like page size, what plugins are used and all that sorta stuff. no personal information. it because of googles new internet explorer application called google 'chrome' they want the information so that their web brower is compatible with pretty much all the sites or something

phpbb3 gives all bots their own usernames, this helps to verify which users browsing are people, and which ones are bots. For server stats, the bots dont have an effect on how many hits the website gets. and blah blah more boring webmaster jargon...

So yahoo! and google arent out to take over the world by taking our computers over and sending humanoid robots to kill us if we disobey?
