| Dont know how many of you have heard about this filter thing for Australia's internet but i think its the most fucked up thing that can potentially wreck Australia's already below par communications network. It will potentially slow Australia's internet speeds by up to 85%, and at the moment we dont have the greatest internet in term of speed in comparision to the rest of the world. They are actually going to be inplementing a trial of this very soon, they are talking about late April to early May. they are looking at blacklisting up to 10,000 websites in an attempt to help 'protect' people from child porn and old men that touch young kids. We all know China already have a filter thing on theor internet for the country and its one of the most extrem ones too. The Chinese government pretty much dictates waht they can or cant see/view on the internet, and this filter on Australia's internet will be just as bad, if not worse. In my opinion it will totally fuck up the internet for us So what does this mean for all of us that play CS:S?? well if it is implemented then we will ahve more lagg then we already do There are 6 companies that are undertaking the trial and they are: - Primus Telecommunications - Tech 2U - Webshield - OMNIconnect - Netforce - Highway 1 So if you have your internet with them things could get a bit annoying very soon However if you are with Telstra, Optus or iiNet you should be sweet for the time being as they are not undertaking the filter bullshit Here is a brief report regarding the issue: The fucked up internet filter And also listen to this audio clip with a more indepth report to it with some interviers with some people, its actually pretty interesting Audio interview thing So what does everyone think about this bullshit?? | |

| this is SUCH a crock of sh*t. there have been plenty of reports that say that the filter will slow the internet down, and that filtering the child porn won't even work, cos it doesn't do sh*t against p2p. so what if the commercial child porn sites are shut down, anyone with half a brain can get round it easy as. but the government still wants to copy china and wreck our internet more than it is.
its just a PR stunt for all the people who know nothing about the internets, pisses me right off

| mclaggin fail more? its called a secure tunnel, works a treat and can still peer to peer.
End of the day no matter what comes up there is a way around it. *edit ( and yes snowy search for section 92 copyright infringement amendment act )
ps the secure tunnel should work for ozzies too. Laggin you can still get your camel pr0n from egypt.
While you normally pay for a secure tunnel it encrypts all data that is outgoing to a server outside of OZ which then decrypts and gets the information before passing it back through the tunnel.
Considering the tunnel is normally at least a 128 encrypt key it takes a while to decode along with the fact that a good tunnel network changes the encryption algo every week or so.

| Effectively the regulation is that if someone aproaches an ISP and shows that the user is illegally downloading content they send an infringement notice.
This happens up to 3 times before the 4th time which the ISP then disconnects and cancels the users account.
Main flaws: ban isnt for all ISP's there is no way to accurately base that an infringement was made some MIT guys that tested a very similar filter made it appear to the filter that a printer was downloading movies. How a printer and a router can do that is beyond me....

| coolest printer ever.
and yeah its the same with anything that 'the man' does, some hacker is going to find a way around it, publish it, and the millions that the company or the government or whoever spent on the protection is effectively useless, except against the retards who can't google and find the fix.

| yeah i watched a report/discussion about piracy on the internet and they talked about this thing with the ISP's sending out notices and then banning them from the internet. Not many people tended to like the idea. however they did talk about another alternative which i think would be pretty good, and that is. say you pay $50 a month on internet, you like downloading music and movies without paying for them and so forth. they said ISP should charge an extra $10 a month in which that $10 goes towards the music/movies industry. i see no problem in paying an extra $10 a month if it enables me to download whatever music of movies that i want from where ever i want and know that its no illegal. my printer downloads movies all that time, its the 'smart' model | |

| yeah funny thing is before this amendment was made to the legislation. The UK had a similar system and got rid of it cause it was un-workable.
a "provider" of internet in terms of the act isnt just ISP's its also any business that provides internet to employees and internet cafes as well. Not the best definition i reckon.

| true, by going on terms of that then, looks to be that RMIT University or the coffee shop i go to every morning could potentially deny me internet access even if i used p2p in the legit way, i.e downloading linux | |

| Snowmann, fortunately not, it takes the rights holder to make a complaint before anything is actioned. Thing is i dont know how much info they are given as to what users do etc. | |

| ahh yeah true true, would be interesting to see what info ISP's gather from their internet users. Im pretty sure they can see where your downloads are coming from, i.e over p2p, through a website, email or whatever. however they CANNOT specifically see that you are downloading this specific song or that specific movie and so forth. This is from my understanding and could be wrong so dont quote me on it | |

| im too lazy to read it all so ima just say what ima say even if its already been sayed ^^. They say that they are blocking "child porn" but they are also trying to block porn from children. So they are not just going to end up trying to block all porn sites.
With the lag China has a massive block thing like this as well and i dont think that they lag much. Then again ive never been to china
