It isn't really that straight forward. South Australian Attorney-General Michael Atkinson is the main person responsible for blocking the R18+ rating, but even if he wasn't on the Committee of Attorney's-General then it'd still be unlikely an R18+ rating would get passed any time soon. There's some real tightasses on the committee, Michael Atkinson is just the most publicised blocker of the rating. I believe it takes a unanimous decision for it to be passed

No, a petition doesn't count for shit. That petition wasn't even directing the issue. It was to get L4D2 uncensored in Aus, aimed at the OFLC. As I said in a previous post if you had bothered to read it the OFLC is not the problem - they're just doing their job, i'm sure some of their members would love to have an R18+ game classification just as much as us, but they don't, so they are forced to ban certain games. The OFLC is stuck between a rock and a hard place and there's nothing they can do about it.

If you think an online petition is going to do anything do change a politiion such as Michael Atkinsons mind then you need a reality check, it's just not going to work. If you want to really do something, write to your local counsel members and tell your friends to do the same, stating reasons and valid arguments as to why an R18+ classification is needed. Sitting at your computer signing an online petition that doesn't address the issue and thinking you're making a difference is pretty stupid. It's like joining facebook groups or twittering about things and thinking stuff's going to change because of your actions.

From the interview I heard with him, not sure if it's 100%, but only a minority of the Attorney generals need to disagree for it not to be passed. Don't hold me to that though.

Yeah it needs to be pretty much a unanimous decision for the R18+ rating to be passed. One asshole can just keep blocking it as long as they're on the committee. Michael Atkinson has stated he's not the only one on there that doesn't want the rating though, but they have showed up support in private, so if that's true then like I said, even getting him out of power won't ensure a new rating
